From the Back Office

The sun is out and the golf course is looking great!  It’s interesting how Mother Nature seems to swing from one extreme to the other here in the great northwest.  After such a lousy spring, it looks like summer may be finally here.  Hopefully I didn’t just jinx it.  With the warmer weather, the golf course gets very busy and we have quite a few groups and outings scheduled.  I mention this to illustrate the importance of making your tee times before you play.  At both Lake Spanaway and Ft. Steilacoom, tee times are available by phone up to 1 week in advance or by registering online and making them up to 2 weeks in advance.  For phone reservations call 253-531-3660 for Lake Spanaway and 253-588-0613 for online reservations go to www.lakespanawaygc.com and follow the instructions after clicking on “online reservations”.
Instruction News

As many of you know, Jason Howells has moved on to greener pastures. He has taken the head golf professional position at Lake Tapps. We will miss his efficiency and quiet enthusiasm very much. He is a great guy and we all wish him the best that life has to offer. Good luck Jason!

And now, I would like to welcome Rob French as our new teaching professional. Rob is a class A member of the PGA and has been a teaching professional for 15 years. He was trained by legendary teaching professional Jimmy Ballard. He teaches his principals of “Connection” and “the Seven Common Denominators” in the golf swing.

For more information go to www.elbowsdown.com and start yourself on the path to a more enjoyable golf experience. Rob will be available for lessons starting June 30th. You can call him directly at 404-694-0211 or call us in the golf shop at 253-531-3660 and we will put you in contact with him. By mid July you will be able to make all of your lesson appointments at the golf shop.

Rob is also going to be hosting a ladies night every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. Range balls and clubs are provided and the cost is $20.00 per person. Advanced reservations are required so call the golf shop and let us know you are coming.

It’s not too late to sign up your kids for one of the junior camps. The next camp is July 7, 8, and 9. Camp 3 is July 28, 29 and 30th. And Camp 4 is August 4, 5, and 6.

Golf Course

We are very lucky to have a crew of maintenance personnel who really care about the condition of both Lake Spanaway and Fort Steilacoom.  These people work very hard and with the machinery they operate they can be in the line of fire every once in a while.  The crew members are mindful of you the golfer but if they happen to be close to where your ball may go, please be patient and wait for them to clear the area to a safe position before you hit your shot.  Most of them are golfers and understand that you just want to play golf but please remember that they have a job to do and they may not be aware that you are there.  If so, get their attention and give them a chance to move out of the way before you play.

Restaurant

Things are really hopping in the restaurant.  Karol would like to remind everyone to check out the “specials board” located directly behind the restaurant counter for the daily specials.  The food is great and the prices are the best in the area so before or after your round stop in to see what’s hot and enjoy!  The beverage cart is running daily so keep your eyes open for the beverage cart operators when you are thirsty and not close to the clubhouse.

Events

The Lake Spanaway men’s club held their member/guest on June 7th.  What a day!  The weather was fantastic and the golf course was beautiful.  The field ended up being 150 strong!  A very impressive turnout.  Low gross honors went to Rhule Reedy and Charlie Oliver with a 67, nice going guys.  Low net was won by Ruppert Wheeler and Bob Wilson with a net 56.  A special thanks to Neal Gepke and the rest of the board for a job well done.

Golf Shop

The golf shop is fully stocked for all of your golfing needs.  We have a great selection of top brand clubs including Callaway, Nike, Ping and Cobra.  Come in and check out our putter selection including Ping, Nike, and Odyssey.  And, of course there is a good selection of shoes from Nike and Foot Joy.  We have hats, socks, jackets, shirts, gloves and a large selection of balls. Almost anything you need to improve your chances of hitting the perfect shot!

Fort Steilacoom

Don’t forget about the neatest 9 hole golf course in the south sound.  Fort Steilacoom has the laid back atmosphere and good conditions that are perfect for a relaxing round of golf.  No pressure here, just nice greens and smooth fairways.  Give us a call at 253-588-0613 to make your tee time.
